Ashleigh and Matt’s wedding was everything a good celebration should be – fun, personal, and filled with all of the things they genuinely love.

Set in a family backyard, their relaxed nuptials took place amongst a lush garden setting complete with lawn games, a delicious BBQ lunch and plenty of DIY elements created with love from friends and family. We were lucky enough to help Ashleigh and Matt deck out their big day with a selection of high bars, stools and casual cocktail seating in fresh whites and timbers to complement their natural surroundings.

We loved hearing Ashleigh and Matt’s relaxed approach to wedding planning as they shared their words of wisdom for us on the blog below. Keep reading for more stunning imagery from Paula May Photography, along with some tips from the bride and groom on planning an authentic and personalised day (without the stress!).

Describe your wedding day: We had a morning ceremony, followed by a lunch and games in Matt’s mum’s backyard, where we first fell in love. We were lucky enough to get perfect weather, despite horrid forecasts and had a relaxed, fun day, surrounded by our family and closest friends.

Where did you find your inspiration for your wedding day? We simply picked the things we like! Ranunculus are my favourite flowers so my mum and I stocked up on these, decorating the backyard with them. Matt and I both love having BBQ’s with backyard games with our friends so it was a given that this would be a part of our wedding day. We also had to make sure the day was kid friendly for our daughter and all of our friend’s babies.

What was your experience like planning your wedding? Relaxed and fun. We didn’t worry about wedding protocols. We wanted to enjoy the day, get to actually spend time with our guests and do the things we like doing, so planning all of these elements was such fun. All of our family members pitched in so we could have lots of DIY elements, just the way we like them.

How did you manage your budget? As we bought a house the day before our wedding, a budget was very important to us. I set a budget at the beginning, after working out what the important elements were to us and stuck to this. We had fun DIYing lots of elements which saved us money and I constantly checked back with the budget to make sure we were in or under where we had set out to be. Our day was perfect to us and we didn’t have compromise any other aspects of our lives to make it happen.

Where was your wedding venue and why did you choose them? Our wedding was at Matt’s Mum’s house. It’s where we first fell in love and also… those views!

Who was your photographer and why did you choose them? My photographer was Paula May from Paula May Photography. We selected her because we wanted someone who would capture the day as it unfolded, rather than having to have a photoshoot at our wedding. She was amazing and we are so happy with the images she got.

Where did you hire your furniture and decor? We hired everything we needed from Hampton Event Hire. The furniture, glassware, cutlery and crockery was gorgeous and fit the look we wanted. They were organised and professional thought out the whole process and took any possible stress out of the day.

Who was your caterer and why did you choose them? My caterer was The Larder (based in Byron Bay) and we picked them because we wanted a fancy BBQ and that was exactly what they provided us with. The food was delicious and the service staff that were with us on the day made our day run seamlessly; we didn’t have to think about a thing.

Who was your florist and why did you choose them? My mum and I did the arbour and table flowers ourselves the day before. We thought it would be fun (which it was) and we could get exactly what we wanted for a fraction of the price.

Who did you hire for entertainment purposes? We just made our own playlists of music we love.

Who provided your cake/desserts? Aunty Karen made our cake which we are still slowly making our way through. It was delicious.

What were the highlights on the day? Getting to spend the day with all of our nearest and dearest family and friends, attempting to out-do each other with our vows, and of course getting to marry each other!

If you could do it all over again, is there anything you would change? I would have picked a different Finska (lawn game) partner so I could have won!

Do you have any tips for other brides? Don’t take it all too seriously.

A huge thanks to Ashleigh and Matt for allowing us to be involved in their special day! Recreate their relaxed garden party vibes with these product picks below – or, get in touch for a copy of our latest catalogue.
