Figuring out your wedding “vision” is one of the first things you’ll want to do when planning your event. The only problem is – with so much inspiration out there, how do you narrow down your ideas into one cohesive theme?

Creating a mood board for your wedding is a great visual exercise to help you capture the look and feel you want to achieve on the day. We love putting mood boards together for our clients, so wanted to share a few simple tips to help you create your own.

Why Create a Wedding Mood Board?

Creating a mood board is one of the best ways to bring your wedding vision to life! A mood board helps you clearly identify your overall wedding style, while also ensuring all of your styling elements (such as furniture, flowers and stationery) work together cohesively without any clashing elements.

Having a go-to mood board for your wedding allows you to stay on track when making styling decisions, and can be an incredibly useful tool for your team of wedding suppliers, too. Mood boards will assist your wedding suppliers with making suggestions, providing styling tips, and ultimately ensuring their work reflects your vision at every step.

Step 1: Define Your Wedding Vision

So, where should you begin with creating a mood board for your wedding? Mapping out your wedding vision is the very first step you’ll want to take – before jumping onto Pinterest!. Take a moment to clearly define the overall vibe you want to create for your wedding, along with your top priorities for the day.

You might want to start by brainstorming some words that reflect the kind of atmosphere you want to achieve – for example: romantic, earthy, bohemian, bold, colourful, luxurious, sophisticated, fun. Try to narrow this down to 3-5 words that really resonate. If you’ve already chosen your wedding venue, keep this aesthetic in mind and draw inspiration from your location and surroundings, too.

2. Collect and Organise Relevant Inspiration

Next, you’ll want to start collecting inspiration and ideas that reflect your desired wedding style. Pinterest is an ideal place to start, as you can make specific searches that align with your vision.

Think back to the words you brainstormed earlier, and consider the kind of colours, materials, textures and details that would best bring this to life. For example: words like “romantic”, “elegant” and “sophisticated” would pair well with pastel tones, gold accents, luxe furniture and scattered candles. Alternatively, words like “relaxed”, “organic” and “coastal” might make you think about natural textures, crisp whites, earthy hues and soft linens.

Use these words, colours, materials and styling elements as you start searching across Pinterest, wedding blogs, design blogs and social media to begin curating inspiration. We recommend creating a board with seperate “sections” on Pinterest for each element of your day to keep things organised – so, a section for flowers, a section for furniture, and so on.

3. Cull Inspiration to Create a Consistent Theme

Once you’ve spent some time sourcing inspiration and ideas for your mood board, take a step back and return with fresh eyes to start culling this down into a consistent theme. Create a new “master” board, and pick your favourite 1-2 images from each section. This master board will allow you to see how your ideas are working together as a whole. Are the colours, materials and styles complementing each other, or are there any clashing elements?

Use this step to tweak and refine your styling inspiration and adapt your master board until you can clearly see a consistent theme that works well together. This master board will now become the framework for your mood board!

4. Assemble Your Mood Board

Now it’s time to start pulling your mood board together! There are a few different ways to do this – you can simply create a blank document in Powerpoint or Word, or use an online design tool like Canva. Platforms like Canva also have pre-made vision board templates and grids that you easily can adapt as needed (just search “mood board” in the templates section, or create a new blank design and add one of the pre-made “grids”).

Mood boards come in all shapes and sizes, and there are definitely no rules when it comes to formatting and design – find a system that works for you! Start by dropping in your favourite inspiration photos and playing around with the layout until you’re happy with the overall feel.

Your mood board pictures don’t all need to be styled wedding photos – you can include details like patterns and fonts, or even add your favourite furniture items directly from our website. You might also choose to create a seperate mood board for each element of your day – eg, flowers, lighting, furniture, stationery.

Something we like to include in our mood boards is a colour palette with the prominent 3-5 colours that appear throughout the design. This really helps to tie the mood board together into one consistent theme. You can also annotate your mood board using words or sentences that reflect your design – this will come in handy when collaborating with your wedding suppliers and helping them understand your vision!

Once your mood board is complete, simply save this as a PDF file and keep it handy as you begin communicating with your different wedding suppliers. Make sure you also refer back to it throughout the wedding planning process to keep your ideas consistent and on track.
